Ulf's really old NIXIE stuffNixies were developed in the early 50's, but were used in a long range until mid of the 70's. Then they were mostly replaced by the brand new LEDs. The first electronic CASIO calculator uses Nixies to display the results. Don't the Tubes look very COOOOOL ? Because the LEDs very not well available in the Soviet Union, the russian engineers used Nixies for calculator also in 1978 within this very nice unit. The ALU (arithmetic logic unit) is designed without any integrated circuit, all done with transistors and diodes.
I also own two Nixie-Voltmeters: A Keithley 160: and a Hartmann & Braun W44: In 1972 this DigAVI was the Multimeter for the very sophisticated engineer: The Schlumberger Frequency Counter was designed in 1970: Next to come....a dekatron GC10 Spinner.... ![]() Here you can see the progress of my own Nixie-Clock-project: February 16th, 2003: The wiring of the prototype now is nearly complete, only the High-Voltage Converter is missing and of course the ICs are not inserted into their sockets. March, 16th, 2003: The missing high voltage power supply was added and a first test software was loaded into the processor. May 17th, 2003: The soft- and hardware work is done...the clock works very properly and displays time and date with high accuracy. The only missing thing now is the final housing. September 2003: The next Nixie-Clock is finished: One with giant B7971-Tubes....below left a 1-Euro-Coin is seen to compare the tube size. In October 2003 an amateur-made Nixie-Counter joined the collection: It is able to count pulses, measure times and frequencies. It seems to be designed by a HAM-radio-specialist. In October 2003 another rarity: A Nixie-Millivoltmeter made in the former German Democratic Republic by RFT: It works still as on the first day.... the pictures speak for themselves... My second own-constructed Nixie-Clock: Uses IN-17 mini-tubes: The MINIXIE-CLOCK All done with Surface-Mount-technology and with a housing..... Some more Nixie stuff will follow soon.... |
